New Online Traveller Declaration by SARS
From 1 July 2026, all travellers entering or leaving South Africa must complete an online customs declaration. Here is what you need to know.
Mandatory from 1 July 2026
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) now requires all persons entering or leaving South Africa — via air, land, sea, or rail — to complete an online traveller declaration as part of the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS). This replaces the old paper customs form.
Who Must Declare?
All South African citizens travelling internationally
South African residents (permanent and temporary)
Foreign nationals entering or departing South Africa
Business travellers, including those attending trade shows and sourcing trips
Exempt: Transit-only passengers who remain in the airport transit area and do not enter South Africa.
How to Submit Your Declaration
SARS Online Portal
Complete your declaration at the official SARS Customs Online Traveller Declaration website.
SATMS Mobile App
Download the SATMS app (iOS & Android) for a seamless mobile experience.
Scan-to-Declare QR Codes
Available at airports and ports of entry for quick access to the declaration form.
Self-Service Kiosks
Use kiosks at major South African airports if you did not declare beforehand.
When to Submit
Declarations must be submitted no more than 24 hours before departure from your country of origin (or the last leg of a multi-stop journey directly to South Africa).
You will not be denied entry for failing to declare in advance. However, SARS Customs officials and self-service terminals will assist you at the port, which may cause delays during peak travel periods.

For MAPS Expedition Participants
If you are joining a Spaza Global MAPS Expedition or sourcing trip to Southern Africa, we recommend completing your traveller declaration as part of your pre-departure preparation. Our team will provide a reminder and step-by-step guidance in your expedition welcome pack.
For commercial samples or trade goods acquired during your expedition, our export and customs support team will assist with the correct declarations and documentation.
Important Notes
Providing false or incomplete information may result in delays, penalties, or goods being detained.
The SATMS system is part of a "whole-of-government" risk management initiative to modernise border control.
The online declaration replaces the paper customs forms previously completed on aircraft or at border posts.
For the latest exemptions and updates, always refer to the official SARS website.
